American Psalmody – Workshop with Book of J

Friday, May 1012:00 PM Inter-American Development Bank

When starting the Book of J collaboration, Jewlia Eisenberg and Jeremiah Lockwood realized that, in addition to their passion for Jewish liturgical traditions, they had a shared repertoire of American folk religious music.

Jewlia had encountered this body of song through her involvement in an activist family, where black and white spirituals had been gainfully re-purposed as protest music; Jeremiah knew the music from his connection to Blues musician Carolina Slim. The same songs are equally at home in devotional and social change contexts.

With the American Psalmody workshop they look at American songs from black and white communities engaged with the Hebrew bible and teach songs and study related texts.
