Shabbat in Song Events:

Friday, May 10 7:00 PM Shirat haNefesh
8814 Kensington Parkway

French Jewish Music for Yom haAtzmaut
Shirat haNefesh invites you to a rare occasion: Kolot HaLev and Hazzan Ramón Tasat and an array of talented musicians celebrate the music of the French Jews. You will hear compositions evocative of the sounds of the Opera and oratorio as they celebrate the immensity of God through the texts of the Psalms. You will taste the geographical diversity and musical styles that coexist in the music of the French Jews. Emile Jonas, Jacques Halévy, Adolphe Attia, Samuel Naumbourg, Georges Bizet and Alphonse Perpignan among others, were remarkable musicians that captured the meaning of Hebrew texts in ways that written words alone cannot. These French composers’ approach to God brings closer to our consciousness mystery, fear, awe, and unspeakable beauty; longing; pain, and passion.
